Who we are, and what we do (day 3)

History and Business Philosophy

  • Founded in 1986 by Doug Wheat, PTI’s core business was in the process market, and the core product mix was Process Instrumentation.
  1. Major founding lines were TBI Analytical and Pyromation Temperature sensors.
  • In 1988, Doug became the Office/Sales Manager for the SLC branch of TMMI.  Doug promoted both companies during this time.
  1.    TMMI’s core market segment was Factory Automation and Machine Integration.
  2.    The main product lines for TMMI in SLC were Banner Engineering, Turck, and Red Lion Controls.
  3.    This was the beginning of the process instrumentation and factory automation model.
  • In 1992 PTI purchased the SLC branch of TMMI and brought all of TMMI’s product lines under the PTI company name.
  • In 2004 a more direct effort to augment both primary business areas was launched.  Chris Wheat worked to complete the “two sides” of the line card.
  • In 2007 PTI was purchased by Chris Wheat.
  • In 2011, Growth is robust, territorial expansion is in progress, and market presence is as strong as ever.

The success of PTI is a simple story. Our business plan has always focused around combining world-class manufacturers, with an industry leading sales team. PTI is devoted to a simple sales philosophy of direct customer selling with a quality product mix that touches every industrial customer in our territory.  These products cover process instrumentation and factory automation.  The geographical territory is large but represents less than 1% of the nations GNP.  When covering this area, we do not have the luxury to drive by potential customers. This is the primary reason Doug’s concept of process instrumentation and factory automation has worked so well.  This simple philosophy has provided continual growth with only one downturn in 25 years, a 3% decline during the recession of 2008/2009.  This concept has been further refined since 2004.  PTI has added quality products to both sides of the line card, giving customers a more complete product offering.

This territory has a wide variety of potential customers. Although not large, markets are many and we have products and presence for all industrial markets.  These include: Oil and Gas, Power, Mining, Food & Beverage, Manufacturing, Chemical, A&E, Constructions, and Specialty Manufacturing.  The only significant vertical market that’s not represented in this territory is Pulp and Paper.

As evident by our line card, we have products that meet the needs of customers in all these markets. Many products are complimentary resulting in a good amount of pull through business. We are continually looking for additional complimentary products and it is our goal to limit competitive overlap on our line card.  It is important to believe in the products we sell and because of this, we are very selective of the lines we add.  Each line plays a critical part to our success and we have structured ourselves in a way that helps us focus on these products and continually grow all our lines.
